
The past weekend in Chicago was marred by a rash of gun violence, according to police reports. Across the city, an alarming number of shootings occurred, resulting in at least 25 people injured and six fatalities between the evening of Friday, August 16, and the night of Sunday, August 18. The victims of these senseless acts of violence ranged in age from 16 to 59 years old, as detailed by CBS News Chicago.
In an incident that escalated dramatically early Sunday morning, Chicago police officers fatally shot a suspect in Pilsen. Officers on duty heard gunshots at around 1:16 a.m. near the 1800 block of South Blue Island Avenue and upon arriving, encountered armed suspects. One man, who reportedly had a gun, was shot by police and later pronounced dead at the hospital, as reported by ABC7 Chicago. Before the police shooting, it was reported that this same suspect had fired upon two other individuals who both sustained critical injuries.
As the weekend's violence unfolded, a 21-year-old man suffered critical injuries after a shooting incident that followed a car crash on the West Side, around 1:08 a.m. Sunday. According to authorities, the man was involved in a collision with a black truck, whose driver then allegedly began shooting at him, resulting in wounds to the head, shoulder, and cheek. The victim was rushed to the hospital in critical condition, and the shooter has not been apprehended, as per CBS News Chicago.
Among the other casualties over the weekend, a man was shot and killed while sitting on a porch in West Englewood late Sunday night. A group of individuals approached and opened fire in the 2100 block of W. 68th Place, striking the 59-year-old victim in the chest, as noted by CBS News Chicago. He was taken to the hospital in serious condition, but specific updates on his status are yet to be disclosed. Within the same time frame, a 28-year-old man was fatally shot in Bronzeville early Saturday and a separate West Side shooting at around 4:40 a.m. left one man dead and two others injured.
