A 14-year-old boy from the west suburbs has been charged with bringing a loaded gun to Glenbard East High School in Lombard, as reported on Tuesday. According to ABC 7 Chicago, the student alerted a school security guard upon discovering the weapon in a boys' bathroom on Monday. The DuPage County state's attorney's office described the handgun as a loaded 9 mm.
In the course of their investigation, Lombard police linked the firearm to the home of another student living in Glendale Heights, the firearm's discovery, and the quick response intertwining, as coincidence, with dread and precaution. Following an interview with the boy, he was taken into custody on suspicion of having introduced the firearm onto the school premises. The charges against him include unlawful use of a weapon in a school setting and possession of a firearm by a minor, as per ABC7 Chicago.
DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin praised the student who reported the handgun, emphasizing the local commitment to a safe educational environment. "I would like to commend the student who did the right thing and brought this matter to the attention of authorities," Berlin stated in remarks obtained by ABC7 Chicago. He further declared that any threat or perceived threat to school safety will be scrutinized and prosecuted if necessary.
The juvenile suspect, whose identity remains protected due to his age, was ordered detained by a judge, until his next court appearance, as detailed by the Chicago Tribune.
