An 18-year-old Hispanic man, Juan Carlos Porter of National City, was pronounced dead after being shot on the I-5 South on-ramp near Chicano Park, as the City of San Diego's official reports confirm.
The incident unfolded in the early morning hours of Sunday when Porter was brought to Paradise Valley Hospital with fatal gunshot wounds. Despite immediate medical intervention, the young man succumbed to his injuries. Local authorities are currently investigating the case as a homicide. Initial responsibility for the case was with the California Highway Patrol. Still, after shots were traced back to the area of Chicano Park, the investigation was handed over to the San Diego Police Homicide Detectives.
On the night of the incident, the San Diego Police responded to reports of gunfire at 12:12 a.m., 1:08 a.m., and 2:06 a.m. near Chicano Park. The first and third calls resulted in no findings. However, during the second, officers found cartridge casings and a vehicle hit by gunfire multiple times. The detectives from the Homicide Unit are further investigating by processing the crime scene, interviewing witnesses, and searching for surveillance video that may have captured the shootings.
