Adding to the gravity of the situation, San Francisco Supervisor Aaron Peskin's office revealed to NBC Bay Area that the suspect, a 17-year-old from Tracy, was also shot with their own gun during the altercation with Pearsall.
In a joint press conference, Mayor Breed, along with District Attorney Brooke Jenkins and Police Chief William Scott, discussed the ongoing investigation. The mayor condemned the violence and reassured the public of collaboration with the DA's office to hold the perpetrators accountable. "This is a terrible and rare incident in Union Square," Breed said, confident that San Francisco's low violent crime rate among major cities will persevere. Breed's assurance echoed the sentiments that violent crime rates in San Francisco declined across every major category tracked by the FBI in its Uniform Crime Reporting Program for the first quarter of 2023. According to CBS San Francisco's figures, these stats reinforce the city's concerted efforts in crime reduction.
