The Utah Royals edged out a 1-0 win against Racing Louisville FC this past Saturday on their home turf, with a match-sealing goal from Ana Tejada in the late stages of the game. As reported by ESPN, Tejada's decisive right-footed stunner came from outside the box in the 78th minute, thanks to an assist from Claudia Zornoza, putting Utah (5-3-14) ahead. Despite not breaking the goalkeeping stronghold of Cristina Roque, who secured two saves, Louisville (6-7-9) couldn't find the back of the net.
In a contest plagued by injuries, the Royals seemed to maintain control, creating opportunities from early on. Both Cam Tucker and Dana Foederer had attempts at goal around the 14th minute, with Zoe Burns joining the effort as noted by ABC4, as the Royals kept the first half alive with continued offensive pressure. Coming out of halftime, Racing Louisville managed a few chances on goal, some denied by Tejada herself and others by Roque, as Louisville struggled to find an equalizer amid the Royals' defensive efforts.
The game tallied a total of 17 shots for Utah with 5 on target, while Louisville ended up with 11 shots, only 2 testing the goalkeeper. Although Louisville managed to take control after the intermission, taking four shots within ten minutes, per KSL Sports, the scales tipped back in Utah's favor as the second half progressed. With attacks and counterattacks being the pattern of the day, it was Tejada's moment of brilliance that settled the score and propelled Utah ahead.
As the clock neared the 90th minute, Tejada unleashed "an absolute steamer toward the net" from the top of the box as described by KSL Sports, overrunning the Louisville's keeper's attempt to make a save. The Royals leveraged their strategic counterattacks throughout the second half, which proved to be a winning formula as they clung onto their slender lead until the final whistle, marking a significant victory in their season's run.
