Avondale, a city known for its practical approach to engaging with its residents, has recently gained national spotlight. The City-County Communications & Marketing Association (3CMA), a group dedicated to fostering the advancement of public engagement and communication, awarded the City of Avondale's Public Works' "Just Add Water" Water Quality Calendar the top honor in the Multi-Image Use Photographs category at the 2024 Savvy Awards.
With over 1,100 entries vying for recognition in 38 categories, the competition was stiff. But, Avondale managed to quickly pull ahead, securing its win during the September 5 ceremony. The calendar's unique blend of stunning food photography, easy-to-follow recipes, and an educational narrative on water quality was a hit among the judges. According to a 2024 Savvy Awards release, one judge lauded the calendar as "absolutely delightful."
The Avondale Public Works calendar was also a collaborative effort across multiple city departments. From the City Manager’s Office to Avondale Fire and Medical, city employees came together to prepare the dishes featured for each month, while the Marketing and Public Relations team handled photography and design. This close-knit production resulted in an in-house masterpiece that also features QR codes—allowing residents to access sanitation and bulk trash schedules with the simple click of a smartphone camera.
"This award exemplifies Avondale’s commitment to creative and engaging communication with our residents," Pier Simeri, Avondale's Director of Marketing and Public Relations, told the City of Avondale's news page, expressing thrill over the recognition for what she described as making information accessible in "a fun and interactive way." It's clear that the team sought to smartly push the boundaries on how municipal information is presented and consumed, and their efforts did not go unnoticed.
