In an Instagram message from Bartavelle Cafe, owners Suzanne Drexhage and Sam Sobolewski announced the potential closure set for September 15, noting, "barring a miracle," the beloved establishment would cease operations. The owners have hesitated to make drastic changes that would alter the essence of the cafe, even as inflation and changes in consumer behavior after the pandemic made their business model unsustainable. Despite being recognized as one of the city's top restaurants, the financial strain has become overwhelming, threatening the cafe's survival, as per the San Francisco Chronicle.

In response, the owners launched a GoFundMe campaign to raise $85,000 to cover outstanding payroll, vendor payments, and mounting debt, including a burdensome loan from Square that worsened their cash flow problems. While the financial situation remains dire, the owners continue to hope for a savior or investor who can help keep the cafe afloat and preserve its role in the community.
