In a time of heightened concern for school safety, Buckeye Police Department reported swift action this past week over an alarming 300-plus tips about school shooting threats. Among these concerns, two students have been charged with crimes related to making false threats.
The first arrest, stemming from a report to the Arizona Counter Terrorism Information Center, implicated a young female student from Bales Elementary School. Following up on the tip, Buckeye police worked quickly to trace the threat back to the adolescent, who now faces weighty charges. "A 13-year-old female student at Bales Elementary School was arrested today after Buckeye police received a tip," according to a statement obtained by Buckeye's official website.
In a similar vein, Buckeye Union High School became the center of attention when a male student broadcasted a claim on social media about a gun spotted in a bathroom on campus. The school, acting on this alarming information, enacted a hold while officers rushed to investigate. Initially rooted in a text, this threat unraveled to be another case of misinformation, resulting in the arrest of a 17-year-old male student who originated the baseless claim.
Through these events, Buckeye police emphasized their prioritization of community safety, treating every threat with the utmost seriousness. They continue to encourage the public to bring forward any and all violence-related social media posts. As stated in the official press from Buckeye, "we want to remind everyone to report posts on social media that involve violence, or threats of violence instead of reposting them." The undercurrent of urgency in their message underscores a zero-tolerance stance against the propagation of threats, credible or otherwise.
