Businesses in Chicago's 12th and 14th Districts are on high alert following a series of burglaries, as reported by the Chicago Police Department. In a string of overnight incidents, assailants wielding a sledgehammer shattered front windows to unlawfully enter, and in some cases, attempted thefts of ATM machines have been made. In other instances, the targets were cannabis and tobacco products.
The burglaries, all occurring in the early hours of September 23, 2024, took place across different North Avenue blocks. Displaying a methodical approach, the offenders hit a business located on the 1300 North Block of Homan Ave at 3:04 AM, quickly followed by three more burglaries on the North Block of Western Ave, happening closely between 3:40 AM and 3:51 AM. Utilizing a 2017-2022 Black Chevrolet Equinox, the thieves have managed to remain elusive, carrying out their crimes with a conveyance that bears unknown registration plates.
Distinct descriptions have surfaced of the individuals responsible for this rash of break-ins. Witnesses describe them as five African American males dressed in black hooded sweatshirts and gray jogging pants, their faces concealed by black ski masks, and their hands by gloves. Though the description is broad, business owners are urged to stay vigilant, and the Chicago Police Department recommends taking precautionary measures.
Amongst the advised defensive strategies, businesses are encouraged to install ArmorPlast, a robust shield designed to resist break-ins, over their existing glass.
