Business owners in Chicago's 16th District are on high alert after a series of late-night commercial burglaries. The unknown offenders, described as two Hispanic males wearing dark clothing, face masks, and gloves, have forcefully entered various establishments using a pry bar to pry open rear doors. Once inside, they've notably targeted cash registers, safes, and ATMs, using portable electric saws to cut into them, and fled in a dark four-door sedan.
These burglaries have occurred at four different locations in the district, per an alert issued by the Chicago Police Department. The first incident was reported on August 29th at the 4800 block of N. Central Ave., followed by more break-ins on September 5th at the 6100 block of N. Canfield Ave., and two on September 9th at the 6600 block of N. Oliphant Ave. and the 7100 block of W. Higgins, respectively.
The CPD is now encouraging local businesses to quickly become aware of this crime trend and to alert other nearby establishments. Business owners have also been urged to scrutinize any suspicious activity or individuals who appear to be loitering around their premises. The Chicago Police Department has emphasized the importance of maintaining functional surveillance cameras as a measure to deter and document any criminal activity.
In the case of a suspicious activity or a crime in progress, the CPD advises business owners and witnesses to not only call 911 immediately but also to make sure to provide a detailed description of the suspects, including any vehicle information and license plate numbers if possible. Ensuring that businesses adopt these vigilance measures can potentially aid in apprehending the criminals and preventing further burglaries in the area.
