According to the official alert, the scam involves offenders, identified as 2-3 Asian females aged 30-40, who engage victims in conversation about finding a doctor before enticing them into what is described as a cleansing or blessing ceremony.
Victims of this concerted scam are reportedly asked to place their money and valuables in a bag for the promise of it being blessed with "blessed water," after which they are advised not to open the bag for several days nor tell anyone of the event. The perpetrators then proceed to remove the valuables, leaving unsuspecting individuals without their belongings and finances. The incidents specified occurred between May and August 2024, with times ranging from late morning to mid-afternoon.
These deceptive practices, which have been reported to take place across various locations such as the 2200 block of S. Wentworth and the 800 block of S. Park Terrace, highlight necessary vigilance in the community. Citizens are urged to be cautious, conduct due diligence prior to engaging in any financial transactions, and especially take heed if approached for such ceremonies or rituals.
For self-protection, the Chicago Police Department advises to "always be aware of your surroundings" and to "immediately report suspicious activity." In addition, if confronted, the recommendation is to remain calm and focus on remembering any unique characteristics of the assailant that could aid in their identification. Further advice includes not chasing a fleeing suspect, but instead promptly contacting the police with any information, including any witness contact details.
