Residents and rideshare drivers in the Grand Crossing neighborhood are on high alert after a series of thefts and robberies have targeted their community, the Chicago Police Department warns. According to a community alert, there have been multiple incidents in the 003rd District during August and September where rideshare drivers were deceived and robbed by what appears to be a duo of young male perpetrators.
In each incident, the rideshare drivers picked up two males, who upon requesting to use the driver's cell phone under the guise of making a call, fled on foot with the phone. Notably, during two of the incidents a firearm was brandished, escalating the thefts to armed robberies. Wearing hooded sweatshirts, the assailants are described as males between the age of 12 to 20 years.
In an effort to catch these culprits and prevent further crimes, the Chicago Police Department has released a detailed list of the locations and times where these incidents occurred. Offenses were reported on the 6700 and 6800 block of South Crandon Ave., with the events happening as early as 12:03 A.M., on August 30, 2024, and as late as 5:30 P.M., on September 8, 2024. All of these incidents seem to follow a similar pattern, presenting a significant concern for the safety of rideshare drivers working in the area.
Chicago Police Department advises the public, especially rideshare drivers, to remain vigilant and always be aware of their surroundings. If confronted, it's important to stay calm and make an effort to remember any distinctive features of the assailants. In the event of such misfortune, witnesses should never be pursued, but rather inform the police. Citizens should gather contact information from any witnesses and immediately dial 9-1-1, staying on the scene when possible to await police arrival.
As this investigation continues, the community rallies together in the hope of halting this disturbing spate of crimes. The Chicago Police Department remains dedicated to safeguarding the citizens and has urged the public to come forward with any relevant information that might assist in capturing these offenders and restoring safety to the residents of Grand Crossing.
