Businesses across Chicago’s 18th, 19th, and 24th Districts are on high alert following a series of burglaries targeting local shops and establishments. The Chicago Police Department has issued a business alert warning proprietors of the thefts, which have seen offenders forcefully entering and ransacking properties for cash during the vulnerable early morning hours.
According to the Chicago Police Department, the burglaries occurred across a swath of neighborhoods from the affluent streets near Lincoln Park to the diverse and industrious Rogers Park. The incidents, clustering on September 1, 2024, were executed with similar M.O. – glass shattered and registers emptied before the first light of dawn.
Incident reports highlight specific locations victimized by the rash of break-ins, naming the 2200 block of North Clark Street and the 2400 block of North Lincoln Ave among others. The precision of these crimes, striking multiple locations within close timeframes, such as the back-to-back burglaries on the 4700 block of North Damen Ave at 04:31 A.M. and again at 04:38 A.M., suggested a level of coordination and intent by the perpetrators.
The suspects, identified as 3-4 male individuals dressed in dark clothing with hoods and gloves, made away from the scenes in a black or silver KIA Soul. The police have encouraged the community to remain vigilant, remarking that keeping one's property well-lit and reporting any suspicious activity can be a powerful deterrent to such criminal endeavors.
In response to the incidents, the Chicago Police Department has offered several precautions for business owners to bolster their defenses: maintain secure windows and doors, promptly address any structural weaknesses, and harness video surveillance to aid law enforcement. "If you are a victim do not touch anything, call police immediately," stressed a Chicago Police official. For those who may witness a burglary, gathering contact information from them may prove critical in the subsequent investigation.
As of yet, no arrests have been made in connection to the burglaries. The Chicago police are appealing to anyone with information to come forward, reinforcing the importance of community collaboration in maintaining the safety and security of Chicago's storied business districts.
