Tragedy shook a Chicago suburb early this morning as four individuals were fatally shot aboard a CTA Blue Line train in Forest Park. According to reports by the Chicago Sun-Times, the incident occurred around 5:30 a.m. at the 711 Desplaines Avenue station. Responding officers found multiple victims, with three dead at the scene and a fourth succumbing to their injuries at Loyola University Medical Center.
As commuters were facing the disruption of their holiday plans on Labor Day, Forest Park Deputy Chief Christopher Chin described the situation to reporters, "It is definitely something you don't want to wake up to. It's a Monday morning on a holiday. Everyone is supposed to enjoying their time off, time with their families, it's Labor Day. To actually have to be here to address a situation like this, it's horrible." The horror unfolded across two train cars, with authorities recovering a firearm and apprehending a suspect on a CTA Pink Line train in the aftermath, as ABC 7 Chicago detailed from surveillance and police description. This suspect is believed to be the sole perpetrator of what is presently considered an isolated incident.
While Forest Park Mayor Rory Hoskins referred to the shooting as an "outlier", there was a plea for more public safety resources. “Forest Park is the only community in Cook County ... with two major train lines that end in Forest Park,” Hoskins conveyed at a press conference, as detailed by Chicago Sun-Times.
Service on the Blue Line was suspended between Forest Park and Austin for several hours, with alternative bus transportation being provided to commuters. The CTA issued a statement, “Although this was an isolated incident, this heinous and egregious act of violence should never have occurred, none the less on a public transit train,” as Chicago Sun-Times reported.
The Forest Park Police are urging anyone with further information to come forward by reaching out to their Criminal Investigations Division. Details about the victims have not been disclosed at this time as police continue their investigations.
