A 16-year-old male juvenile is now facing serious charges, including one count of armed robbery with a firearm, as well as another count of robbery, following a pair of recent incidents targeting individuals in Chicago. The Chicago Police Department, sharing details on their official website, disclosed that the youth was apprehended on the 18th of September after being identified as the individual behind both crimes.
The first event occurred on September 10, where, according to the Chicago Police Department's report, the juvenile reportedly robbed a 37-year-old male at gunpoint in the vicinity of the 6800 block of S. Crandon Ave. The victim was a rideshare driver who suffered the loss of property while on duty. Arrested near the 6700 block of S. Crandon Ave, the police were able to connect the accused to the crime.
Further investigation led to the teenager's identification in a separate event, happening just days later on September 13, when a 26-year-old female, who was also driving for a rideshare company, was robbed in the 7200 block of S. Exchange Ave. No injuries were reported in both cases, but the losses of the victims added to a troubling trend of targeted assaults on individuals simply trying to earn a living through the gig economy.
The Chicago Police Department has confirmed that the young suspect is in custody and has subsequently been charged for his alleged involvement in the crimes. As the case unfolds, the department has not released additional details. Nevertheless, the identification of the suspect yields a moment of respite to local drivers, who have been on high alert following the string of robberies. The community conversation now turns towards understanding the pathways that lead youth to engage in such desperate and dangerous activities.
