In a straightforward rescue off the coast near San Clemente Island, a Coast Guard helicopter crew successfully lifted a 32-year-old man from a commercial fishing vessel on Wednesday. The extraction was initiated after the crew member aboard the vessel Legacy suffered from seizure-like symptoms necessitating an urgent medical evacuation or medevac, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.
Reports from the Coast Guard Sector San Diego Joint Harbor Operations Center had come in at approximately 4:15 p.m., after receiving a distress signal from the Legacy. The message was clear: a 32-year-old male needed to immediately be evacuated to ensure his well-being. The Coast Guard team was set to swiftly mobilize, coordinating the launch of an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter aircrew from Air Station San Diego about an hour later, at around 5:10 p.m.
The helicopter arrived on-scene promptly, managing the technical challenge of airlifting the patient from the vessel. Following the hoisting procedure, which took place a mere mile west of the island, the patient was flown to Sector San Diego. There, he was transferred to awaiting emergency medical services personnel. The handoff took place at around 6:40 p.m., as noted by the U.S. Coast Guard press release.
