Two devastating blazes tore through Phoenix this past Sunday, leaving the community to grapple with the consequences. In the first early afternoon incident, firefighters battled flames at a four-story apartment complex near 8th Avenue and Osborn Road, FOX 10 Phoenix reported. The Phoenix Fire Department, met with intense fire conditions, called for a second alarm and deployed high-rise firefighting tactics to manage the blaze which resulted in the injury of two firefighters who "were treated and transported to the hospital for minor injuries they sustained during firefighting activities," as stated by the fire department.
The second incident, occurring near 16th Street and McDowell Road, proved fatal for a family pet and placed an elderly man in a critical predicament. According to 12News, firefighters found the man inside the home and immediately removed him to safety, administering treatment before rushing him to the hospital in critical condition. Another adult was treated on the scene for smoke inhalation but did not require hospitalization.
Residents were evacuated from the apartment complex as crews worked to clear the smoke and fire. The Phoenix Fire Department described the scene, stating, "Due to the amount of fire, and the size of the building, incident command requested a second alarm. Crews laid multiple supply lines, and deployed hoselines to multiple floors using high rise firefighting tactics." It’s estimated dozens of occupants will be displaced due to this event.
The causes of both fires remain under investigation. As the community begins the process of recovery, victims of both fires are being offered assistance programs. In the wake of these incidents, questions linger, and as reported by both 12News and FOX 10 Phoenix, updates will be provided as new information becomes available, leaving the community to stay tuned for further developments.
