Extended Road Closures for War Memorial and Legislative Plaza Announced as Nashville Enters Phase 3a of Construction

The Department of General Services (DGS) has announced the next stage of adjustments for residents and commuters to navigate. October 7, marks the transition into Phase 3a of the War Memorial and Legislative Plaza Closure Plan, which will see an extended fencing perimeter enveloping the area around these historic bulwarks.

This new phase involves the closure of additional streets, specifically the remaining sections of the block surrounding the Legislative Plaza and War Memorial buildings. Notably, the northbound lane of 7th Avenue will remain shut down, and local traffic will be rerouted to 6th Avenue or Rosa Parks Avenue from Union Street, according to DGS's published update. Here, steel fences will arise, charting a new temporary border, as detailed in Map 1 attached to the DGS's update (the fenced area shown in red). Drivers should brace for this modification, knowing that the roads will lead them on a different dance while this phase of the project persists.

Yet, the changes harbored by DGS are not confined to reimagined traffic paths alone. A full closure of 7th Avenue is on the horizon for roughly two weeks at the end of October. Specific dates and further guidance will be disseminated as the closure approaches.

Amid these disruptions, access to the Capitol will persist, unabated through the Motlow Tunnel on MLK Boulevard – a passage highlighted in green on Map 1 until the onset of Phase 3b in January 2025. As the city's arteries are rerouted and constrained by the steel of fences and the flow of construction, DGS extends thanks to the community for its patience and flexibility, as mentioned by the news release.
