Early Sunday in West Town, a collision between two vehicles escalated into a fatal confrontation, leaving one person dead due to a gunshot injury. The Chicago Police Department reported that around 2 a.m., in the 1500 block of North Magnolia Avenue, a crash led to an exchange of gunfire. A male victim was struck in the chest and was subsequently transported to Northwestern Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.
Further information from WGN-TV revealed that the victim was outside his car when he was shot in the right side of his chest by a suspect in a red vehicle involved in the crash. The alleged shooter left the scene before law enforcement's arrival, and the age of the victim remains uncertain at this time. The area where the incident took place was closed off for investigation but has since reopened.
Officials have not yet provided additional details regarding the events leading up to the crash and shooting. Area Five detectives of the Chicago Police Department are investigating this incident, which adds to the concerning instances of traffic accidents turning violent within the city. At this stage, no suspects have been taken into custody.
The aftermath of the incident impacted traffic, with a section of North Avenue, from just before North Throop Street to North Kingsbury Street across the bridge, being closed during the ongoing police investigation.
