The body of a man found in the Cumberland River on September 16 has been confirmed by authorities to be that of 54-year-old Craig Martin Evans from Niceville, Florida. The drowning victim, whose identity was released over a week after the recovery, was not listed as missing and did not have a documented history in Davidson County.
While the circumstances around Evans's appearance in the river remain unclear, an initial investigation by the Medical Examiner’s Office found "The preliminary autopsy did not show any obvious signs of foul play," according to an official statement released by the Nashville Metropolitan Police Department. The police are awaiting the results of a thorough autopsy intended to determine Evans’ exact cause of death, but at the moment, details are scarce. The fact that Evans was not reported missing, nor had ties to the local area, compounds the mystery surrounding his demise.
The discovery of the body near 1st Avenue North prompted a swift response from local authorities, but the absence of immediate identifiers prolonged the process of putting a name to the victim. The identification came to light only after forensic experts completed their examination, with the news elaborated on the Nashville government's official website.
In a statement obtained by Nashville.gov, the Medical Examiner’s Office reiterated its commitment to uncovering the circumstances that led to Evans’ tragic end. They encouraged anyone with potentially relevant information to come forward as part of the ongoing investigation, the Medical Examiner's findings will be crucial for law enforcement to piece together Evans’s last moments.
