Westside Middle School in Frayser will remain closed today, following a shooting incident that left a staff member wounded and currently hospitalized. The shooting took place shortly after 8 p.m. on Thursday, as a coach was leaving a football practice session with several students, reported WREG. Classes are expected to resume on Monday.
In a statement obtained by FOX13 Memphis, the school has confirmed that the coach, after being shot behind the right ear, is in stable condition. This announcement was also shared on the school's Facebook page by principal Ms. Chiquita Perry, emphasizing that "We are relieved to report that the staff member is stable and currently receiving medical care" and providing reassurance that students and staff will have access to crisis counselors.
The exact circumstances surrounding the shooting remain murky, but according to the Memphis Police, it began when the coach was offering students rides home from practice. Upon their departure, they were suddenly pursued by a white Infiniti SUV and a Dodge Charger. Someone from the Infiniti allegedly opened fire on the coach’s vehicle, leading to the coach sustaining a gunshot wound and driving to a local fire station for assistance, detailed WREG. In the aftermath, police found 10 rifle shell casings at the intersection and learned that a stolen Dodge Charger was involved in a subsequent car crash.
While no immediate arrests have been reported, an increased security presence at Westside Middle School will be established to maintain a safe environment, as informed by Local Memphis. The principal, in her message, urged the school community to maintain vigilance and report any relevant information, stating, "If you or your child has any information about this incident or if there are any concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out to school administration or local law enforcement."
The community’s response has deftly been one of concern and support, with parents and students being encouraged to communicate openly about safety and to utilize the provided counseling resources in navigating through the emotional upheaval that such incidents invariably cause. As the investigation continues, Westside Middle School’s administration promises to keep its families informed and supported.
