A 48-year-old man lost his life in a tragic vehicular incident on Monday evening in Granite City. The deceased was identified as Robert D. Wallace, confirmed by both police and the Madison County Coroner.
The crash occurred around 6:10 p.m. when Wallace's 2017 Chevrolet Traverse, traveling south on Nameokie Road, veered off the road and collided with the West Pontoon Road overpass, reported by First Alert 4. Efforts to quickly extricate him and render aid were made by first responders, but Wallace was pronounced dead shortly after the accident, at 6:26 p.m. Authorities noted he had not been wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.
Stephen P. Nonn, the Madison County Coroner, indicated in initial findings that blunt chest trauma contributed to Wallace's demise. According to Nonn, as FOX 2 Now reported, routine toxicology tests are to be conducted as a part of the ongoing investigation to determine if any substances were a factor in the accident. Meanwhile, Irwin Chapel in Granite City is handling the funeral arrangements for Wallace.
While the incident is still under rigorous investigation to unravel precisely why the vehicle left the roadway, the severity of the impact left emergency crews with little room to maneuver in their rescue efforts. "Emergency personnel were able to remove him from the vehicle to attempt lifesaving measures, but his injuries were too severe, and he died at the scene," conveyed a statement by the Madison County Coroner's office, as detailed by Advantage News.
