Hialeah FedEx Worker Hailed for Stopping Suspected Package Theft Caught on Camera

A FedEx worker in Hialeah, Florida has been praised for his quick-thinking actions after a video captured him attempting a theft during a delivery. The footage, recorded by a Ring doorbell camera, was shared on social media, including the NBC Miami and CBS News Miami websites, shows the employee confronting an individual who appeared to be attempting to steal a package from a homeowner's doorstep.

In the video, the FedEx employee is seen asking the suspected thief to open the door of the house to prove residency, which the individual failed to do. The confrontation escalated when the worker took out his phone, presumably to capture evidence of the suspicious behavior. "I do not know you, I'm going to call the police," the deliveryman is heard saying as the man walks away, according to CBS News Miami. The homeowner, identified as Anthony Peña, was alerted to the commotion via his intercom and subsequently praised the delivery worker for "defended my property," as stated in an interview with Telemundo 51, an NBC6 sister station.

According to CBS News Miami, the alleged thief has been attempting to intercept deliveries, particularly iPhones, in the Hialeah and Hollywood areas. Social media users and the ONLY in DADE Instagram account, where the video was also shared, have voiced admiration for the driver's actions, with some calling for a reward or recognition for his exemplary behavior in the face of potential theft.

Responding to the incident, FedEx highlighted the importance of security for their customers' shipments and backed their courier's actions. "The security of our customers' shipments is our top priority, and we appreciate our courier's quick actions to make sure the shipment was delivered to its intended recipient," FedEx stated to CBS News Miami. The company also encourages customers to report any suspected thefts to local law enforcement and makes use of various technologies, such as Picture Proof of Delivery and the FedEx Delivery Manager, to provide reassurances to customers regarding the delivery of their packages. As the story garners attention, the Hialeah Police Department has opened an investigation into the matter, though no arrests have been reported at the time of publication.
