Indianapolis has paid homage to one of its most lauded political figures, the late Richard Lugar, with a new statue and monument unveiled today in his honor. The tribute to the former U.S. Senator and Indianapolis Mayor, who served the state of Indiana with distinction for over three decades, now stands at Bicentennial Unity Plaza, just outside the Indianapolis City-County Building. FOX59 reports that a crowd, including some of Lugar's former staffers and constituents, gathered to celebrate the figure who has left behind a legacy of bipartisanship and public service.
The proceedings were marked by the keynote speech of former U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, as hundreds of attendees looked on. Lugar, who died in 2019, was remembered not only for his political acumen but also for reimagining the downtown Indianapolis area, and his work on nuclear nonproliferation that reached across the globe. As reported by the Indiana Capital Chronicle, planning for the monument began under the leadership of Jim Morris, who recently passed away in July.
The ceremony, organized by The Rotary Club of Indianapolis, was hosted close to the Gainbridge Fieldhouse at 125 S. Pennsylvania Street, offering open seating and complimentary parking for those who wished to attend, as per a report by WISH-TV.
Charlie Richardson, a retired attorney who decisively aligned his career path with Lugar after being inspired by one of his speeches, shared his reflections. "Of course, the career of Dick Lugar spanned over half a century. And because of that expanse and impact, we had to ... make sure it’s part of the monument," Richardson told the Indiana Capital Chronicle. He outlined that the monument was designed to honor the full breadth of Lugar's storied career, which included roles as a Rhodes Scholar, naval officer, school board member, mayor, and United States senator.
