Indianapolis commuters should prepare for a change as variable speed limits are set to start on a section of I-465 on the city's southeast side. The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) will adjust the speed limit based on real-time factors such as traffic, incidents, work zones, and weather, as per WTHR.

"There’s a lot of speed on I-465," Kyleigh Cramer, the public relations director for INDOT, told WIBC. She elaborated that the area under focus, due to construction and prevalent speeding, will see the new system go live on or after Sept. 10. This implementation enables limits to adjust in 5 mph increments based on various road and weather circumstances.

Traditionally set at 55 mph, the stretch of interstate running through Marion County will now be subject to a dynamic range where, according to FOX59, the speed limit can reduce to or increase from base levels in increments of 5 mph. It's a futuristic traffic management tool that is already hinted at by the digital signs towering every half-mile along both sides of the corridor. The flexibility of this new system means that, depending on how the conditions on the road pan out, drivers might find themselves cruising at a cool 55 mph, decelerating to a cautious 35 mph, or adjusting to other speed variations in between.
