An incident at the Marion County Adult Detention Center has resulted in one deputy hospitalized after an attack by an inmate. On the afternoon of September 19, two deputies at the facility were assaulted during a routine inmate count, WTHR reports. During the process, an inmate, identified as Jamond Harris, reportedly resisted orders to return to his cell, leading to an altercation.
According to the Marion County Sheriff’s Office, the confrontation escalated quickly from verbal to physical. "Harris escalated the situation and punched the deputy," officials stated in a release obtained by FOX59. The deputy involved was forced to deploy her department-issued pepper spray, but the situation intensified as Harris knocked the deputy to the ground, continuing the attack until other deputies intervened.
The injured deputy was taken to Eskenazi Hospital to receive medical care for the injuries sustained. The extent of her injuries has not been disclosed to the public. Meanwhile, inmate Harris was placed on administrative lockdown following the incident. Currently, he is being held on multiple charges, including robbery, dealing narcotics, and possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon.
An ongoing investigation into the attack was confirmed by the sheriff’s office. WRTV notes that the case will be reviewed by the Marion County Prosecutor's Office, which will decide if additional charges are warranted based on the findings. Details of the inmate’s history or the circumstances leading to the altercation have not yet been released, as the investigation remains active.
