The Columbus Police Department is currently investigating a death that led to a brief lockdown at Indiana University-Columbus (IUC) on Wednesday. The incident occurred in the university parking lot located on the 4600 block of Central Avenue, according to a FOX 59 report. Police have stated that the public is not in danger, and the lockdown was subsequently lifted.
Further details have emerged identifying the deceased as Andrew Shoaf, a 40-year-old man from Columbus. "So far, I can say that no foul play is suspected," said CPD spokesman Skylar Berry in a statement obtained by The Republic. The investigation into the circumstances surrounding Shoaf's death is to actively continue, with police not providing further immediate details.
The university had gone into lockdown as a precautionary measure after the discovery of Shoaf in the IUC parking lot. However, after assessing the situation, authorities deemed that there was no ongoing threat to those on campus or in the surrounding community. The brief lockdown was a part of the university's safety protocols in response to such incidents.
A Local News Digital article confirms that the lockdown has been lifted and classes have since resumed normal operations. CPD has not yet fully concluded what led to Shoaf's death but insists that as more information becomes available, the public will be duly informed. As this is an ongoing investigation, updates are expected to follow soon.
