On Saturday night, Brigham Young University's football team set the bar high for their 2024 season opener with an authoritative 41-13 victory over Southern Illinois. Sophomore quarterback Jake Retzlaff, who recently secured the starting role over Gerry Bohanon, demonstrated his prowess by completing 20 of 30 passes, racking up 348 yards, and connecting for three touchdowns. Retzlaff’s performance, highlighting touchdown drives on BYU's first two possessions, a notable 57-yard touchdown pass to JoJo Phillips, and Retzlaff's display of strategic field command that set the tempo for the night, as reported by ABC4.
While Retzlaff’s arm was undeniably the centerpiece of the evening BYU’s ground game showed versatility, with running backs LJ Martin and Hinckley Ropati combining for a powerful 124 yards and each contributing a touchdown; the duo exemplified BYU's balanced and formidable offensive strategies that also kept the Salukis at bay, as detailed by Grainger Today. Despite efforts by Southern Illinois' quarterback DJ Williams who managed 121 rushing yards and scored both of his team's touchdowns the Salukis could not contend with the relentless assault from BYU's offense nor the pressure from BYU's defense, which tallied two sacks and frequent quarterback hurries.
Sidelined by health concerns, BYU's offensive coordinator, Aaron Roderick, who suffered a heart attack just days prior, participated via headset from the press box while head coach Kalani Sitake shouldered his duties. Sitake expressed his heavy concern for Roderick's well-being during the ordeal. "That was kind of hard for me to hear," Sitake shared when reflecting on the scare surrounding his colleague's health. "All I cared about was if he's okay. Is my friend okay?" as per KSL, emphasizing the relief that Roderick was on a path to recovery.
