Kane County officials are stepping up to inform the public of a deceiving trend making the rounds—the emergence of jury duty scams preying on unsuspecting residents, with the methods specifically exploiting court-related fears. According to the Chicago Sun-Times, scammers have been dialing Kane County locals, under the guise of authority, threatening arrest for supposed missed jury duty unless a fine is hastily paid—these miscreants even invoking the names and telephone numbers of actual Kane County deputies to lend credence to their con.
The Kane County Sheriff’s Office has been quick to repudiate such underhanded tactics, asserting they never ring up residents threatening imprisonment over missed civic obligations like jury service nor for financial demands to sidestep legal repercussions the sheriff's office said Tuesday, and the public should be alert to preserve their personal information from these swindlers. This guidance, alongside other safety precautions, was shared in a Facebook post, as highlighted by WGN-TV, which additionally advises individuals to inquire directly with the Kane County Jury Commission to verify jury duty status and the legitimacy of related communications.
The Sheriff's Office spokesperson starkly warned, "Do not fall for this scam even if the scammers use real Kane County Deputy names and telephone numbers," a sentiment echoed across both initial warnings.
Residents are encouraged to directly contact the Kane County Jury Commission at 630-232-3466, with operating hours between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, apart from federal and court holidays, for any uncertainties about jury duty or to report any dubious calls claiming to represent court authorities, the commission stationed at the Kane County Courthouse at 100 South 3rd Street, in suite 230 for in-person inquiries and additional assistance.
