As instances of threats against schools become increasingly visible on social media, Las Cruces authorities are doubling down on prevention and consequence education. According to the City of Las Cruces, by the Las Cruces Police Department and Las Cruces Public Schools, students are being reminded of the serious implications tied to making, posting, or sharing threats of shootings on platforms like Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram. These warnings come following the charges against three local teenagers, aged 11, 13, and 15, respectively, for such activities.
The sequence of arrests in the past few weeks suggest a troubling trend among young people, who for various reasons, may fail to grasp the gravity of their online behaviors, behaviors that ripple out far beyond the digital realm. "Our district is grateful for the partnership with the Las Cruces Police Department to keep our students and staff safe," LCPS Superintendent Ignacio Ruiz said, as per the City of Las Cruces. He also stressed the importance of using available resources to report crimes, a course of action that should be as instinctual as calling 911, or as discreet as the STOPit app, which allows for anonymous reporting.
Las Cruces Police department is earnest in their approach, vowing to investigate every threat made towards a school environment and maintaining ongoing collaboration with school officials to safeguard the community's youth and educators. The shared aim here is not merely to punish but to preemptively protect, to prevent the theoretical threat from ever becoming a terrifying reality.
For Las Cruces students, the consequences extend into the school domain as well, with authorities having the power to suspend or expel those implicated in threat-related activities. As educational spaces across the country grapple with the complexities of digital communication and the visceral fear that echoes from past tragedies, Las Cruces is taking a definitive stance. Encouraging vigilance, proposing solutions like the STOPit app, and sharpening the legal teeth with which to bite back at threats, signal a growing intolerance for anything that might compromise the sanctity of school safety.
