The Information Technology Department team in the City of Maricopa, consisting of a 12-person team, has been instrumental in implementing significant technological advancements over the past four years. An overview released by the City details accomplishments such as the rollout of high-speed fiber internet in City buildings and the setting up of resilient backup systems that ensure continuous network operation. Moreover, they have transitioned essential software programs to the cloud, remotely enhancing the community's access to municipal resources. Maricopa's IT department has also enhanced the Copper Sky facility with comprehensive Wi-Fi coverage and expanded geographic information systems (GIS) use.
All these technical upgrades and initiatives focus on fiscal responsibility. Chief Information Officer Michael Collins expressed pride not only in the department's achievements but also in managing the city's resources effectively. "We’re able to keep our annual budget modest, by cutting waste, and strong negotiations with our vendors," Collins affirmed, signaling to residents their commitment to economic spending.
Engagement with cell phone carriers and internet service providers is another unsung aspect of the department's work. They keenly update these external entities on the city's development trends, ensuring infrastructure keeps pace with the populace's needs. Collins emphasized the importance of this dialogue, saying, "Telling our story to these groups is important to me, as it helps drive more technology options for our citizens and businesses." These contributions, often lost in the backdrop of daily routines, are critical to propelling Maricopa forward into a connected and tech-savvy future.
In light of National IT Professionals Day on September 17, the city took the opportunity to shine a light on the individuals behind these essential services. The "Meet Your Maricopa" special edition featured members of the IT team, underscoring their role as the backbone of city operations and celebrating them as the quiet heroes of municipal infrastructure.
