The McHenry County Sheriff's Office has wrapped up its "Click It or Ticket" campaign, a push to promote seat belt use and traffic safety during the Labor Day holiday period. The enforcement effort has resulted in a slew of tickets: according to the sheriff's office, officers doled out a total of 128 citations.
Not all citations were for seat belt violations specifically, though these took a significant chunk, with 48 instances of motorists being caught unbuckled. Electronic communication violations—undoubtedly pointing to distracted driving—racked up 8 citations, and there were 9 tickets issued for suspended registration, 4 for driving on a suspended, revoked, or nonexistent license, and 32 for speeding throughout McHenry County.
The campaign also highlighted the issue of uninsured motorists, with 11 tickets issued in this category. Additional citations, totaling 16, were handed out for various other traffic offenses, demonstrating the range of safety issues the sheriff's office aimed to address during the heightened enforcement period.
These enforcement campaigns are a regular fixture during holiday periods when road traffic is typically heavier and the risk of accidents increases. The McHenry County Sheriff's Office's latest efforts reflect a continuing commitment to road safety and the enforcement of traffic laws designed to protect the community. Despite the clear message that not wearing a seat belt is both dangerous and illegal, nearly half of the violations processed during this period are related to this very issue.
