Nonresidential entities in Mecklenburg County, such as small businesses and nonprofits, have an opportunity to safely dispose of their hazardous waste while saving some green. The Mecklenburg County Solid Waste and Recycling is hosting a special collection event on September 18, reducing fees for eligible organizations. These entities typically face hurdles in removing hazardous materials, which are not accepted at the county's recycling centers geared towards residential waste.
The venue for this expense-saving collection is the County’s tire and metal facility, located at 5740 Rozzelles Ferry Road in Charlotte. This initiative arrives as part of the county's ongoing efforts to assist nonresidential establishments that generate small quantities of hazardous waste—labeled by EPA standards as very small quantity generators.
"Lots of organizations can qualify as a very small quantity generator," Jeff Smithberger, director of Solid Waste and Recycling, elaborated on the classifications. "Do you have a small business, nonprofit, church or other organization that generates hazardous waste? Let us help you!" This statement, which extends an invitation obtained by the Mecklenburg County.
Qualifying organizations looking to properly dispose their unwanted fluorescent light bulbs, pesticides, rechargeable batteries, and paints will find relief from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the event. However, due to the limited space, appointments are necessary to participate. Moreover, the first five qualifying Mecklenburg County customers to sign up and partake in the event will benefit from an additional incentive—a $100 discount.
