A recent car crash in Memphis has highlighted ongoing concerns about the safety of Jackson Avenue. Late Saturday evening, a Nissan Armada swerved across a median, collided with a fence, and ultimately struck a residence at 1643 Jackson Avenue, as reported by Local Memphis. The driver was taken to Regional One where she later died from her injuries; the passenger sustained non-critical injuries.

According to WREG, neighbors have described Jackson Avenue as a 'speedway,' highlighting the frequency of road incidents in the area. Ms. Perlie, a resident living near the crash site, recounted, "She (the driver) started right here when she came up on the curb and took out my fence straight over into that house. It sounded like someone dropped a bomb." Notably, another community member, Jabari Williams expressed his concern over the potential danger of living close to the street before learning about the accident that evening.

The Memphis Police Department is currently investigating the incident. Action News 5 also highlighted the long-term issues raised by residents, with Pearlie Sotolongo living on Jackson Avenue for over three decades, stating, "I’ve been here 32 years and I’ve never been able to get into my driveway."

In her interview with Action News 5, Sotolongo said she felt "blessed" that the recent crash did not result in more harm to her own household, considering its proximity to where the Nissan Armada struck. However, she added, "I’ve watched three people get killed by the church. They drive fast around here." Sotolongo mentioned she has little hope for change, apart from prayer, to address the ongoing problem. As the community copes with the aftermath of the latest incident and the loss of life, the need for effective solutions to ensure the safety of Jackson Avenue residents remains a pressing concern.
