A violent altercation at a Miami Beach bus stop resulted in the beating and stabbing of a 72-year-old man.
The victim, Luciano Lastra, is currently hospitalized in the intensive care unit at Jackson Memorial Hospital. He recounted the harrowing incident, where he detailed how the suspect attacked after disembarking the bus, kicking Lastra near the ribs and throwing him to the ground. In the struggle, Lastra's knife fell and was turned against him, resulting in his injuries, as reported by WSVN.
The assailant, identified as 26-year-old Gianni D’Angelo McIntosh Jones, was arrested and charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon on an elderly victim. During his bond court appearance, Miami Beach Police detailed the severity of Lastra's injuries, which included cuts, hematomas, and abrasions, according to a statement made in court, as 7News reported.
McIntosh Jones, who is listed as homeless, had an altercation with Lastra onboard the bus prior to the attack. A bus driver and other witnesses reported that he was antagonizing Lastra throughout the ride. The situation escalated when both men got off at the bus stop at the 500 block of Alton Road, where McIntosh Jones continued his assault, police say. In an official statement, a Miami Beach Police Officer described that a witness on the bus "saw the victim almost underneath the bus as the defendant was kicking the victim," as reported by NBC Miami.
McIntosh Jones has been denied bond and will remain in custody until his arraignment on October 15. Miami Beach Police apprehended him close to the scene of the incident, and he has since confessed to parts of the assault, including using a knife against Lastra and walking away after knocking him unconscious. Miami Beach Police assert their swift response led to the immediate apprehension of the suspect, according to 7News.
