Deegan is to receive the departmental Lifesaving Award and will be recognized as the Distinguished Officer of the Month for August. This commendation comes after Deegan's swift action in a critical incident earlier in the summer, where a 63-year-old man suffered a gunshot wound and Deegan's response helped to save the man's life.
On a late Wednesday evening in June, Officer Deegan was first to arrive on the scene of a harrowing accident where an individual had accidentally shot himself. According to the official press release from the department, Deegan began to immediately assess and address the victim's injuries, applying a tourniquet to stop the severe hemorrhaging which proved to be a decisive factor in preserving the victim's life until Miami-Dade Fire Rescue could take over the emergency care.
The ceremony, which is to be open to media attendees, is scheduled for September 30, from 12:30 a.m. to 01:30 a.m. at the Miami-Dade Police Department Fred Taylor Headquarters Building auditorium. It represents not just a personal accolade for Officer Deegan, but also underscores the daily risks and critical interventions managed by police officers.
Officer Deegan's actions on that critical day in June clearly exemplify the department's dedication to service, with the press release stating, “Officer Deegan’s tremendous effort to help save the victim’s life reflects great credit upon himself and the Department.” His quick thinking and decisive measures allowed for a life to be saved, a fact that is sure to be central to the upcoming departmental celebrations.
