The Miami-Dade Water and Sewer Department (WASD) is set to switch up its water disinfection methods for a two-week period starting September 9 as part of a routine maintenance aimed at ensuring residents continue to receive clean, drinkable water. According to an announcement by the WASD, this yearly event involves a partnership with the Florida Department of Health in Miami-Dade County and the Miami-Dade Department of Regulatory and Economic Resources (RER).

This year marks over three decades of this annual tradition, wherein WASD temporarily replaces the standard chloramine-treated water with free chlorine. The temporary shift is an effective way to clean the water distribution system, WASD reported. While some residents may notice a stronger chlorine taste, or smell in the tap water during the conversion—the water remains safe to use and drink. Moreover, special populations, including those who use dialysis machines and maintain fish in aquariums, are advised to seek professional consultation during this period.

Apart from the change in disinfection method, locals might also observe department staff flushing water lines throughout Miami-Dade County. This is an intentional exercise to ensure the free chlorine reaches the entire distribution system, said WASD. Customers might experience brief periods where water pressure dips or notice cloudy water from their taps. Should the latter happen, the department recommends allowing the water to run for a few minutes until it clears. These adjustments are part of WASD's larger commitment to delivering water quality and reliability.

Residents with concerns or questions about water quality during the chlorine conversion can reach out to the Department's Laboratory Division. Those situated north of Southwest Eighth Street can call 786-552-4738, while, those laying south are instructed to dial 786-552-4181. Further details on the department’s various services and programs can be found on the WASD website.
