
In a tragic turn of events, Michigan State Police Motor Carrier Officer Daniel Kerstetter will be taken off life support after succumbing to his injuries from a severe crash on Interstate 75 in Lincoln Park, as detailed in a statement by the Michigan State Police last night. The accident, which occurred on Friday, involved a Ford Explorer that struck a median wall and continued onto the highway before impacting Kerstetter's vehicle, leading to the patrol car being pinned beneath a semi-truck, The Detroit News reports.
The 45-year-old officer, while performing a traffic stop, was inside his vehicle with his seat belt fastened when the crash happened, the vehicle required extrication using the Jaws of Life further details provided by Michigan State Police emphasize the treacherous nature of such incidents, which occurred less than two weeks after similar crashes involving State Police cars in Wayne County. Officer Kerstetter joined the MSP in January 2023 and was celebrated for his dedication to public safety on May 25, 2023, as part of the 26th Motor Carrier Officer Recruit School according to Audacy.
The tragedy has not only affected the Michigan State Police community but also extended to Kerstetter's personal life; he leaves behind a spouse and three children, understated yet poignant as reflected in statements by Col. James F. Grady II, director of the MSP, who expressed the collective heartbreak over the loss and honored Kerstetter's final act of organ donation asserting “Traffic enforcement is dangerous work. The dedication of our motor carrier officers and troopers to keeping the public safe on our roadways is commendable and honorable. With the decision to give the gift of life, even in his death, MC Officer Kerstetter is serving others,” a statement obtained by The Detroit News.
