A tragic episode unfolded in Nashville this week during what appears to have been a road rage incident leading to the death of a dog. According to reports from WSMV, Metro Nashville police are on the hunt for a suspect who allegedly fired shots into a vehicle, fatally wounding a German Shepherd in the backseat late Wednesday night.
The event took place near Percy Priest Lake, around 11:20 p.m., as the victim was driving on Bell Road. The gunman said to have been tailing the victim in a black Dodge Ram pickup truck, opened fire as the victim came to a stop at a red light. "On our way home, everything was fine, and when we got to Bell Road, a guy in a truck was driving erratically behind me," the victim, Whitney Peterson, told News 2. The suspect subsequently fled the scene heading northbound on Bell Road.
The German Shepherd named Scout was not simply a pet but a lifeline for Peterson during difficult times. Peterson expressed his profound loss in an emotional interview with News 2, saying, "Scout came to me in 2021 when the world was kind of crumbling around me, and he was pretty instrumental in lifting me up out of depression, he gave me an immense amount of purpose." The shooting has jarred the local community, where Scout was widely known and loved.
Police are soliciting information from the public, requesting that anyone with knowledge about the incident to call Crime Stoppers at 615-742-7463, as noted in the respective reports from NewsChannel 5. The search for the gunman continues, with detectives from the Hermitage Precinct leading the investigation.
