The Nevada County Sheriff's Office has been cracking down on illegal cannabis operations, executing multiple search warrants across the county last month. According to a media released by the NCSO, eight properties were targeted in Nevada City and Grass Valley, with the discovery of 11,498 illegal cannabis plants and nearly 500 lbs. of processed cannabis.
These operations didn't just implicate violations of cannabis cultivation laws. Environmental damages associated with these unlawful enterprises were apparent, showing a blatant disregard for the wellbeing of the ecosystem. Officers at the scene found everything from harmful chemicals being discharged into waterways to littering. Among the incidents, two individuals were cite-arrested for illegal cannabis cultivation, and additional violations for possession of controlled substances were noted at some sites.
Detailed amongst the raids, on Aug. 9 a cite-arrest occurred on Chablis Way and another on Aug. 27 on Cruzon Grade Rd, both in Nevada City, according to the NCSO. The latter also faced charges for possessing a controlled substance while armed.
Joined by several allied agencies such as California Fish and Wildlife and the Department of Cannabis Compliance, the NCSO's Special Investigation Unit is not only rooting out illegal narcotics but also safeguarding the community and its natural resources. The Sheriff's Office has invited locals to report suspected illegal operations, providing an anonymous tip form available on their website.
Illegal cannabis cultivations, as these searches have shown, tend to cross the boundaries of mere unlicensed business operations, posing severe risks not only to public health but to the environment as well. The collected evidence and associated cases are now with the Nevada County District Attorney's Office, awaiting further review and the continuation of justice's course.
