In Bend, Oregon, a collaborative effort between Oregon Housing and Community Services (OHCS) and Bend-Redmond Habitat for Humanity has resulted in the construction of 12 new affordable homes, bringing much-needed relief to families struggling to find stable housing in an area where median home prices hover near $775,000. This development, known as 27th Street Townhomes, stands as a testament to the possibility of securing affordable living spaces in a market that typically shuts out low to median income earners.
Ashley, one of the new homeowners and a single mother expressed her gratitude, "I never thought I would have the privilege of being a homeowner in beautiful Bend as a single mother," she told Oregon Housing and Community Services. These townhomes not only offer a reduced average monthly payment, but are also energy-efficient, boasting solar panels to help drastically cut energy costs for these residents.
The effort put into making the 27th Street Townhomes a reality has been substantial, with funding from the LIFT Homeownership program and the Homeownership Market Cost Offset Fund playing a critical role. These programs aim to fill the financial voids caused by spiking construction costs that often derail projects before they can reach fruition. Additionally, Bend-Redmond Habitat for Humanity provided down payment assistance, easing the financial burden for low-income families stepping into their new roles as homeowners.
"Ashley's story of homeownership is one shared by many others," Andrea Bell, OHCS Executive Director, highlighted the broader impact of these initiatives. Through such collaborations, the state agency not merely aims to provide roofs over heads; their mission extends to enriching the quality of life for Oregonians by encouraging stability and community growth. Upcoming projects include seven more homes set to open later this season in Redmond, with owners already chosen, ready to begin their new chapters, according to the State of Oregon official website.
