In what can only be described as a harrowing incident for local law enforcement, a drive-by shooting targeted the Parkland Precinct of the Pierce County Sheriff's Department. According to the Sheriff’s Department blog, deputies were inside their precinct on September 11th, just past midnight when they heard gunshots coming from a dark vehicle traveling along Pacific Ave S.
Reacting swiftly, a deputy and sergeant pursued the direction of the suspect’s escape, losing sight of the dark sedan before noticing it making a U-Turn at the Spanaway Lake Golf Course's gate. The suspect positioned his car ominously behind the law enforcement vehicle—"The deputy feared the suspect was going to start firing at him," the Sheriff's blog reports. Meanwhile, the sergeant ahead had also slowed, creating distance between himself, and the suspect.
Shifting the situation, the sergeant entered a Safeway parking lot, and the deputy increased distance through an intersection. This maneuvering allowed deputies to circle behind the suspect, where they could safely conduct a stop. The suspect obliged, pulling over at 16000 B St S, and was detained without incident; a firearm was, however, not initially found on the suspect.
That firearm, a Sig Sauer pistol, was eventually located near the golf course gate from where the suspect had emerged. The evidence gathering continued with detectives finding a spent shell casing inside the suspect’s car, upon execution, of a search warrant. No shell casings or bullets were found at the precinct—perhaps a small consolation for the officers who found themselves targets on that unnerving night.
Facing serious charges including Drive-by Shooting, Assault, and Unlawful Possession of a Firearm in the 1st Degree, the 33-year-old suspect now resides in Pierce County Jail.
