Thomas Leelyn Rose, a 19-year-old man, has been apprehended and is facing a first-degree felony murder charge after a deadly incident in Riverton's Monarch Meadows neighborhood. The arrest, which landed Rose in the Salt Lake County Jail, relates to the mid-August shooting that resulted in the death of an unidentified 19-year-old male, as reported by ABC4.
The victim was discovered on August 19, having sustained multiple gunshot wounds. According to KUTV, the young man was found carrying a machete and handgun and notably was wearing a Kevlar vest. The reports do not yet clarify the events leading up to the fatal encounter or the motive behind it.
Rose, who authorities have noted is a "documented gang member with a history of weapons and drug violations," is being held without bail. A judge issued the no-bail order citing "substantial danger to witnesses and others in the community," as obtained by Fox13. This decision comes after an earlier brush with law enforcement, specifically, an incident two months prior involving Rose allegedly spitting in a man's face multiple times at the University Mall in Orem.
The Riverton Police Department has expressed that while the name of the shooting victim will be released later, their investigation is ongoing. They are looking into other individuals who may have obstructed the investigative process. Further details about the case and the individuals involved are expected as the investigation continues, and the Riverton community seeks answers to the violent act that occurred amidst them.
