In a recent incident, a Salt Lake City police officer sustained injuries after a suspected impaired driver barreled into a lineup of three parked police cars, with the Salt Lake City Police Department confirming the officer has returned to duty. According to SLCPD, the chain reaction crash occurred early in the morning when a 25-year-old driver collided with the rear of a patrol car that was actively engaged in a separate impaired-driving inquiry.

The series of events unfolded at 1:06 a.m. on 700 East where the crash spawned a ripple effect damaging three police vehicles that were on-site providing traffic control for an ongoing, unrelated crash investigation and at the time officers were investigating another case of impaired driving, they had their emergency lights on which should have served as a clear signal to the 25-year-old driver identified as Alonzo Ganga. The collision resulted in injuries to an officer and the driver involved in the initial crash probe, both were inside a police vehicle struck by Ganga's car.

First responders at the scene immediately rendered medical assistance to the injured parties. The hospital subsequently released both the officer and the driver involved in the first investigation after receiving treatment for their non-life-threatening injuries. Remarkably, the 25-year-old man who caused the new collision was unharmed in the incident.

SLCPD issued a ticket to the 47-year-old woman from the initial impaired-driving scene, and the Utah Highway Patrol took over the investigation into the subsequent crash involving the three patrol cars, the department has offered several photos from the scene with the provision that media credits be given to the Salt Lake City Police Department for using these images. Ganga now faces charges and is currently detained at the Salt Lake County Metro Jail, these are allegations at this stage, and he, like all defendants, maintains the presumption of innocence until proven otherwise in a court of law.

Police Chief Mike Brown expressed relief and gratitude for the officer's quick return to duty, underscoring the perils officers confront daily on the streets. "I'm incredibly thankful that our officer is already back to work keeping our city safe," Brown said, as per SLCPD. "This incident is a clear reminder of the dangers our police officers face every day. We’re fortunate this wasn’t worse, and I strongly urge everyone to make responsible and safe choices—never drive under the influence."
