With the school bells ringing in a new academic year, San Antonio Municipal Court is taking a proactive approach to tackle the issue of chronic absenteeism among students. In line with September's Attendance Awareness Month, the Court is set to bolster its support for local schools through various events aimed at addressing attendance concerns. These efforts underscore the importance of being present in the classroom as a cornerstone for academic achievement and personal development.
Research shows that students who are chronically absent—missing 10% or more of the school year—are much more likely to struggle in their studies and face difficulties with social and emotional growth. There's a clear link between regular attendance and educational success. To combat this, San Antonio's Municipal Court provides continuous truancy prevention and intervention, utilizing a dedicated team of Juvenile Case Managers who work closely with students, families, and educators.
According to a recent news release by the City of San Antonio, starting this September, the Court will convene four 'Senior Summit: Rise to Graduation' events to specifically aid high school seniors at risk of not completing their education. With interactive workshops, mentorship, and inspirational speakers, the Summits are tailored to equip seniors with the necessary tools to persevere and make it to graduation day.
Highlighting the essence of these initiatives, Municipal Court Presiding Judge Carla Obledo stressed the holistic nature of attendance. "Attendance is more than just being present in the classroom—it’s about engagement, connection, and creating a positive school culture where every student feels supported," she told on the City's official website. This belief in a comprehensive approach shows the Court's dedication to not just mitigating truancy but fostering an environment conducive to success for all students.
