Travelers planning to navigate the westbound lanes of the I-80 San Francisco/Oakland Bay Bridge at night should be prepared for disruptions starting on Thursday. Caltrans has announced lane closures for routine cable inspection and maintenance, a necessary process to keep this critical infrastructure in good shape. According to Caltrans, the closures will occur from 8:00 PM to 4:00 AM, Monday through Friday nights, with the work expected to run until May 2025.
The stretch affected will be from the exit of the Yerba Buena Island Tunnel to the terminus of the bridge. During these closures, the speed limit will drop to 40MPH to ensure the safety of the workers and the motorists. Those who frequently travel the bridge during these hours may encounter minor delays and are advised to seek alternate routes or consider public transportation.
Public transit options such as MUNI, BART, CalTrain, and AC Transit provide alternatives that could alleviate some of the inconveniences caused by the nighttime construction. Caltrans expresses its gratitude for the patience of all commuters and encourages the use of these services where feasible.
Traffic control measures will aid drivers near the construction zone, including changeable message signs and directional indicators. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) will be on-site to ensure compliance with the reduced speed limits.
