A tense standoff in Miami's Liberty City neighborhood concluded on Tuesday with the detention of a man wanted for robbery after he barricaded himself inside an apartment. According to Officer Kiara Delva, a spokeswoman for the Miami Police, the department's Felony Apprehension Team was executing a warrant near Northwest 67th Street and 13th Avenue when the suspect refused to exit the residence. The situation, which unfolded at the Liberty Square apartment complex, demanded an hours-long operation involving local law enforcement and SWAT officers, Local 10 News reported.
The standoff lasted close to four hours, during which time the authorities were to carefully navigate the incident to prevent any violence. Surrounding areas were cordoned off, and Holmes Elementary School was put on lockdown as a precaution, though students were dismissed without issue, a school spokeswoman assured. Aerial views provided by Sky 10 exhibited a large police perimeter with SWAT members stationed strategically as the situation played out. In her statement obtained by CBS News Miami, Delva noted that the incident required the police to proceed deliberately and take their time, reflecting the gravity of the situation.
Throughout the ordeal, more than 50 residents of the apartment complex were seen observing from a courtyard. Police used technological aids such as drones to gain better views of the premises and employed a bullhorn to communicate with the individual inside. "To the occupants inside 1310 Northwest 67TH Street, apartment 306, this is the Miami Police Department. We have a search warrant, so all occupants come outside with your hands up and leave your weapons inside," police could be heard addressing the barricaded man, as reported CBS News Miami.
Eventually, the standoff reached its conclusion with the suspect's detention, although no further details were provided about whether he was alone in the apartment at the time of arrest. Detectives indicated they would maintain a small perimeter around the complex to continue their investigation.
