A high-speed police chase through the streets of Coral Gables culminated in a crash after a van, reported stolen from HCA Florida Mercy Hospital in Miami, was spotted by officers Tuesday night. The pursuit began when Coral Gables Police Department's Crime Suppression team attempted to stop the stolen vehicle, which had been identified via a be-on-the-lookout (BOLO) alert from Miami police. The chase ended near the crossroads of Le Jeune Road and University Drive, according to Local 10 News.
During the pursuit, it's reported that the suspect rammed through several police vehicles in a desperate bid to evade capture. The incident concluded when the van crashed at the intersection of Anastasia Avenue and University Drive, as detailed by WSVN.
Coral Gables Police Sgt. Michelle Christensen stated, "Around 9 p.m. tonight, our units got a BOLO for a stolen vehicle out of the city of Miami. The vehicle was a stolen van, stolen in the city of Miami’s jurisdiction," in a statement obtained by Local 10 News.
The suspect, whose identity has not yet been disclosed to the public, was transported to a hospital for treatment following the incident. The nature and extent of their injuries remain unknown. Local authorities have remained tight-lipped about any potential charges that the suspect may face.
Remarkably, there were no injuries reported among the police officers or civilians involved, despite the violent conclusion of the chase. Investigations are continuing, and while details surrounding the suspect are yet to be released, Coral Gables Police Department has reassured the community that there is no ongoing threat.
