Authorities have arrested 26-year-old Dimas Gabriel Yanez, a person of interest in connection with a reported stabbing of a teenage girl at a baseball game in Lowell, Indiana, CBS News Chicago reports. The incident took place on Saturday during a baseball game near the VFW hall, located at 17401 Morse Street.
The Lake County Sheriff’s Department led an extensive manhunt, with multiple units and surrounding law enforcement agencies joining to quickly locate Yanez. He was captured on Sunday in a cornfield near 120th and Iowa, allegedly trying to alter his appearance by getting his hair cut. The Chicago Tribune stated, "the suspect is still considered armed and dangerous," prior to his arrest.
The original attack was detailed as being a random assault with the victim, a 14-year-old girl, being stabbed in the hand while she and her mother were attending her brother's baseball game. When the mother intervened, the assailant also attempted to stab her. Lake County Sheriff Oscar Martinez Jr. described the attack as "a random attack" in a press statement obtained by The Chicago Tribune.
Following the attack, the suspect was chased into the woods behind homes on the 6100 block of Oak Valley Drive, sparking an immediate search. During the search, a butcher-style knife, believed to have been used in the attack, was discovered. The victim of the stabbing was treated and released from a local hospital. Sheriff's officers urged residents to keep their homes and vehicles locked and to notify police of any suspicious activity.
The investigation is being led by the Lake County Sheriff's Department Special Victims Unit. Authorities are still urging anyone with further information to swiftly contact 911, despite the recent arrest of Yanez. As the community tries to process this unsettling event, the focus remains sharply on ensuring the safety of its residents and bringing those responsible to justice.
