In a move to spotlight those who are forging positive paths for the youth in Tempe, the Tempe Coalition together with Tempe Community Council (TCC) is presenting the Celebrating Champions for Youth event. Sponsored by SRP, this event honors individuals and organizations that have shown a significant dedication to uplifting young lives. With nominations open until Oct. 4, according to Tempe, AZ.
Three distinct categories delineate the awards. The Youth Awards target young people or groups within the Tempe school district who have made a splash, not only achieving their own goals but also inspiring their peers. Adults aren't left out of the honor roll, with categories including the Inspiration Award for community figures inspiring local youth, and the Protector Award for front-line responders. Not to forget, the Advocate Award nods to organizations fighting for youth-centric programs and policies. Despite the temptation to think nominations will be accounted for by all of Tempe's spirited front-liners, only services impacting Tempe's youth are eligible for these honors.
Returning as emcee is Jody Jackson, an Emmy-winning sportscaster who sets an example through her work across TV, radio, and digital platforms, in addition to teaching at ASU's Walter Cronkite School of Journalism. As mentioned in a statement, "Every year, we come together to celebrate the inspiring stories of our deserving youth and champions. Their heartfelt journeys are the reason we do this work and cherish this community event," said Tempe Coalition Director Bernadette Coggins.
Tempe Coalition, known for its commitment to mitigating youth risk behaviors, brings together residents and professionals who share a common agenda—improving the lives of Tempe’s younger population. Octavia Harris, the TCC Executive Director, spoke about the celebration as an avenue to applaud the efforts of those shaping the community’s future leaders and advocates. "Everyday our youth and community face challenges that test their resilience. TCC is grateful to recognize youth and adults in our community who advocate for achieving positive goals and making an impact," Harris expressed, as per Tempe, AZ.
The convergence of community members, local leaders, and awardees will occur on Thursday, Oct. 24 at 6 p.m. at the Tempe Union High School District Professional Learning Center. This will be the event's 8th annual iteration. For those interested in nominations, sponsorship, or attending the ceremony, further details can be found on the TCC website.
